New Calexico Album – “Algiers” Out on New Label Anti- on September 11th

Back in April, I announced that Calexico would be releasing their first album since 2008’s Carried To Dust. Yesterday, the band announced the details around the new album as well as tour dates.

The album will be called Algiers, and will be released by their new US label Anti- Records as well as their long-time European label City Slang.

Along with this announcement is a pre-order for a very elaborate German boxset for $99, which includes Algiers on 180g vinyl with tip on and embossed cover, 2 CD (includes a bonus CD) digipack, a photo book, a screen print of the cover art, a sticker and an exclusive live performance on 180g vinyl. If that wasn’t enough, there is a download of three bonus tracks! Calexico did a great job with the vinyl boxset of the tour-only albums, so it’s great to see they are continuing to cater to the vinyl collectors!

Algiers Tracklist:

  1. Epic – 4:16
  2. Splitter – 3:30

Upcoming Release : Booker T. Takes “The Road From Memphis” with The Roots and Daptone’s Gabriel Roth on May 10.

Following up 2009’s GRAMMY-winning Potato Hole should have been tough for Booker T. Jones to follow. In fact, who would have blamed him if he took a break, resting on the achievement– which was a tribute as much as an updating of the Southern Fried B-3 fueled sound he effectively served on dozens of sides on Stax Records with his band The MG’s. Backing Booker T. on Potato Hole was an Überband of Neil Young and The Drive-By Truckers and produced by main Trucker Patterson Hood which delivered its Hammond barbeque with a side of Gibson distortion.

The formula for following up Potato Hole was to enlist go-to backing band from Philly THE ROOTS! Titled The Road From Memphis the album also features vocals from Sharon Jones, Lou Reed, Yim Yames from My Morning Jacket, and Matt Berninger from The National. Jones himself steps up for a rare vocal as does his daughter Liv. The album is produced by ?uestlove of The Roots and is engineered by Gabe Roth of Daptone Records.

Frankly, this album has GRAMMY written all over it.

Anti- Records released Potato Hole on 2 LP 180g that sounded pretty damn amazing. For The Road From Memphis according to Amazon, it will be 1 LP. No word on weight, but I’d have to believe it will be 180g again.

Here is some footage of Booker T. and the Roots taking on Lauren Hill‘s “Everything is Everything”:

Joe Henry’s Blood From Stars Due Out August 18th

Ever since I heard Joe Henry’s Short Man’s Room which was backed by the Jayhawks in 1993, I have been a constant fan of his very wry songwriting and organic approach to his music. His last two albums, 2003’s Tiny Voices and 2007’s Civilians really established a sound for Henry that he carried to his production work for artists like Bettye LaVette and Solomon Burke to great effect.

On August 18, Anti- Records will be releasing Henry’s 11th album titled Blood From Stars. Blood From Stars is a departure of that sound he established for his last two albums, and is, according to Henry, a more “emotionally available, certainly less mannered… much more electric, in the literal and also the emotional sense of the word. It is raw with many loose threads hanging.”

He said that the tone and sound of the album is a result of the collection of musicians he has assembled to record Blood From Stars, including legendary sideman Marc Ribot, saying “Partly, I just loved what happened when this particular group of musicians heard a song and had to respond to it in a very immediate way… if you limit them to your own imagination, then you’re just cutting yourself off from the richest resource you have.”

Track listing for Blood From Stars:

  • Prelude: Light No Lamp When The Sun Comes Down
  • The Man I Keep Hid
  • Channel
  • This Is My Favorite Cage
  • Death To The Storm
  • All Blues Hail Mary
  • Bellwether
  • Progress of Love (Dark Ground)
  • Over Her Shoulder
  • Suit On A Frame
  • Truce
  • Stars
  • Coda: Light No Lamp When The Sun Comes Down

Upcoming Show: Lyrics Born @ The Picador in Iowa City – 4/15/09!

Lyrics Born

Well, it looks like I don’t have to drive to Minneapolis on April 17th, as Lyrics Born will be stopping by Iowa City on his way from Madison to Minneapolis!

Lyrics Born along with Joyo Velarde and DJ D-Sharp will be playing the Picador in Iowa City on Wednesday, April 15th. A Wednesday night show will be a little rough for work the next day, and there isn’t much for seating at the Picador so it will be a standing night. Doors are at 9PM according to the Picador site and Ticketweb, and they are a very reasonable $15. Other acts to be announced.

A Taste of Everywhere At Once— Lyrics Born’s New Single “I Like It, I Love It”

Can you feel it? Even through the massively cold weather the prospect of a new Lyrics Born album turns my mind to Spring and Summer. Monday night Lyrics Born’s first single from his new album Everywhere At Once out April 22nd on his new home Anti- was debuted on Bay radio station Live105.

The song “I Like It, I Love It” is an instant trunk-thumping classic. 80’s style analog synths, and 808 claps and popping distorted bass guitars drive a great dance groove and a chorus that sticks in your head. “Every time that I get up on the microphone I’ve gotta dedicate a rhyme to you, girl…” The girl, of course is his wife Joyo and he certainly does! Her new album Love and Understanding is in the can at long last and ready for its release due on Quannum this summer. That should guarantee an amazing tour headlining together!

The digital single will be released on iTunes and Amazon on February 19th. For now, you can listen to the song on Lyrics Born’s MySpace page player and on his website at lyricsborn.com.

I’m pretty excited about this song and album– I feel like it is going to blow up!
