I love to collect compilations of rare and non-album tracks. That’s probably not surprising considering the name of this blog. I’ve been a big fan of Kelly Finnigan collecting all of the Monophonics albums, his solo records and quite a few 7″ singles. Just in the years he’s fronted Monophonics and joining Colemine Records he’s had a lot of releases and that’s not including the production work he’s done for other artists.

Since I follow him closely, I’m pretty aware of his catalog and in particular the more rare releases that have come out, so when B-Sides, Singles & Forgotten Gems was announced, I was pretty stoked to pick it up. The track list includes a lot of songs that I didn’t have or really were aware of previously, so it’s a great overview of his career as well. I’m providing a breakdown of the tracks and where they came from– a little crate-digging information.

1. Freedom (2011 – B-Side Colemine Records CLMN-110 7″) This is the flipside to the Monophonics non-album single “Like Yesterday.” This is credited to Finnigan’s earlier project Destruments. According to Finnigan’s quote in the press release for this album this song was put on here to show the full progression of his work with Colemine. “There’s so much focus on [the early work of] Monophonics that [Destruments] gets overshadowed and forgotten about, so I’m happy to reintroduce it.”
2. She Won’t Be Gone Long (2018 – A-Side Transistor Sound – TSR-004 7″) A rare/out of print single credited to The Sentiments. Considering that their only other documented single is also on this collection, it stands to reason that The Sentiments are a collection of musicians he’s working with for these singles.
3. Trouble (2019, – B-Side Colemine Records CLMN-170 7″) This is the flipside to the limited-to-1000 pink vinyl 7″ for “Catch Me I’m Falling” from Tales People Tell. Also on the From Me To You mixtape.
4. It’s Not That Easy (2019, B-Side Colemine Records CLMN-168 7″) The B-Side of another single from Finnigan’s 2019 debut solo album Tales People Tell. This one is a cover of Reuben Bell and the Casanovas soulful 1967 single. This is a fairly straight reading of the song, but in Finnigan’s hands (and voice) it sounds at home. Also on the From Me To You mixtape.
5. Thom’s Hartbreak (2024, B-Side Colemine Records CLMN-245 7″) A flute-forward instrumental tribute to producers Thomas Bell and William Hart who came up in the Philly R&B scene with Gamble and Huff which was also featured on the From Me To You Mixtape.
6. My Love Is For You (2023, Colemine Records CLMN-254B 7″) Chimes and analog synth cradle Finnigan’s incomparable falsetto voice on this rare track that was exclusive to the From Me To You mixtape and then became the B-side to “Trust In Me” in 2025.
7. It Hurts Me So Much (2024, B-Side Colemine Records – CLMN-216 7″) The back of the “Get A Hold Of Yourself” 7″ which dropped towards the end of 2024. This track is a smoldering cover of the Charles Chalmer-penned Stax side by Barbara and the Browns.
8. Keep Me In Mind (2025, A-Side Colemine Records – CLMN-260 7″) This cover of the 1967 Samson & Delilah track originally on ABC Records features Chicago soul legend Renaldo Domino who recorded sides with Mercury in the 1960’s and has his own single on Colemine “No Laggin’ and Draggin'” Finnigan and Domino sing in a dual lead and harmony recalling Sam and Dave. The B-side of “Keep Me In Mind” is “Let Me Count The Reasons” from 2024’s A Lover Was Born.
9. Trust In Me (2025, A-Side Colemine Records – CLMN-254A 7″) An outtake from the A Lover Was Born sessions becomes the A-Side for this single with the aforementioned “My Love Is For You” as the flip. This is a really rare single. It was only available as 7″ with the limited to 450 “Dinked Edition” of the album.
10. The Hurting Truth (2026) This is a new track exclusive to this compilation. At least until it shows up as a B-Side on a future single! Quoted in the press release: “‘I had just gotten into my new space in Cincinnati,’ recalls Finnigan. ‘The day before Jimmy came, Terry (Cole, Colemine’s label head) had come over and played bass on a different song…so when Jimmy came early, and Terry wasn’t here, I was like, ‘Yo, Jimmy, I want you to play on this song I’m working on.’ Jimmy’s always down…and so he played the bass… doing his thing, and then he played the guitar part…and he helped finish the song, and then I finished the words and melodies… it came together fast.'”

Considering the span of years for this compilation (2011-2026) this is an impressively balanced release– a testament to Kelly Finnigan’s vision for his music and his passion for continually creating masterpieces with the attendant support of Terry Cole and Colemine Records.
